How the GCAA raises funds

As we've already said, the annual grant for site maintenance from the Council doesn't go very far towards covering all of the costs involved in keeping our site running. An important part of the GCAA's work is, therefore, raising extra funds by organising special events during the year.

 The Annual Show

By far our biggest and most important event of the year, this is always held on the first Sunday in September. GCAA plot holders exhibit their fruits, vegetables, and flowers, in various categories, as well as their home-made jams, jellies, pickles, and often elaborately decorated cakes, all of which are judged by local experts. We welcome all plot holders, but particularly novice growers - there are no giant leeks or pumpkin-sized onions at our Show!

Everyone's plot is also judged for its quality, diversity, and biodiversity, and guided tours of the site are given on the day. The climax of the Show is the Awards Ceremony.

Our Allotment Café serves an amazing array of home-made savouries, salads and bakes, and hot and cold drinks, all provided by a small army of volunteers who keep it going throughout: serving, replenishing supplies, and of course, washing-up!

In addition, the National Gardens Scheme (NGS) charity holds one of its Open Days at our Show, bringing us many visitors from all over London and the surrounding counties, and adding to the crowd of neighbours who visit with their families every year.
