The Composting Toilet!!!

Yes, we have a composting toilet on site - it's not often that an allotment site can boast about one of these. How does it work?

Just as nature recycles garden waste into compost, the Enviroloo (to give it its manufacturer's name) provides the right environment for recycling human waste, toilet paper and organic material (small quantities of lime used to clean it) to break down through a natural process into an inoffensive, compost-like material. This is done by separating the liquid from the solid waste. Then, using radiant heat and prevailing wind, oxygen is passed through the system, stimulating aerobic decomposition and deodorisation. This is periodically sucked out and removed as necessary, by outside contractors. The GCAA pays for this as well as toilet paper and cleaning supplies.

Yes, it has to be cleaned, by (yet more) volunteers. It's not difficult and full instructions are posted inside. There is also a rota - so if you use the composting toilet, please take a turn at cleaning it, this takes 5 - 10 minutes at most.

If you use it, at least clean up after yourself as necessary.

The Enviroloo is designed only for human waste and limited quantities of toilet paper: NOTHING ELSE!
